ABOUT VERNON NEW JERSEY
Vernon Township, home to roughly 25,000 people, is tucked away in the northeast corner of Sussex County.
Flanked by Wantage Township to the west, Hardyston Township to the south and West Milford in neighboring Passaic County to the east, it shares its northern border with New York state.
More than 40% of Vernon’s 70 square miles is preserved open space and the township is criss-crossed by both federal and state parks as well as a 20-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Communities within the township include Glenwood, Highland Lakes, McAfee, Vernon Valley, Barry Lakes and Lake Wallkill.
Vernon thrives as a year round destination for outdoor enthusiasts of every persuasion. The convergence of skiers and snowboarders during the winter months gives way to hikers, golfers, mountain bikers, kayakers, campers, picnickers…you name it. Vernon definitely lives up to its billing as New Jersey’s four season recreation community.
Attractions include a Mountain Ski Resort , Mountain Waterpark , Crystal Spring Resort with 7 championship golf courses and health spa, a number of highly-acclaimed bed & breakfast inns and Mother Nature’s gift to the township–Wawayanda State Park and the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge .
In terms of governmental representation, Vernon Township is in the 5th congressional district and the 24th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature.
The Vernon Township School District serves students in Kindergarten through twelfth grade and consists of three primary schools, two middle schools and a high school.
